Week 44 / The ‘New’ Corner of Church and Carlton

November 28 – December 4, 2011

Maple Leaf Gardens opened in 1931.  It was the home of the Toronto Maple Leafs for 68 years and served as a concert venue for all of the big names.  This week it re-opened it’s doors to the public as the newest Loblaws location.  I was curious to see what the outcome would be…a grocery store in the place where the Leafs won 11 Stanley Cups.

Everything is big.  This massive ‘Loblaws’ sets the tone upon entering.

A 5 metre wall of cheese.

A man among cupcakes.

There are a lot of neat details throughout the space that pay tribute to the building’s history.  This massive Maple Leaf is made out of seats from what would have been the ‘Blue’ section.

Even the tables are collages of photos from past icons who called the Gardens home.

Pillars between aisles are used as displays to remind shoppers about the history of the building.

A large portion of the store has the feeling of a high-end food court, including a Sushi bar.

There is a clear theme…large bold titles.  It definitely helps getting around the massive space.

The ‘island’ deli.

The other side of the deli.

An in-store bakery.

This man takes his chicken very seriously.
